Hi, I’m Cathy, the Open-Hearted Therapist. Thanks for checking out my website! I’m a Registered Social Worker (RSW), with over 25 years of experience as a counsellor, behaviour therapist and college professor. I consider it an honour and a privilege to help others overcome life’s challenges and become the best version of themselves. The personal values I bring to our therapeutic relationship are warmth, genuine caring, integrity, and unconditional support; all to help you recognize the best in yourself and begin to feel better.
I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Masters degree in Social Work (MSW) in 2003. I also have degrees in Psychology and Adult Education, and a diploma in Behavioural Science Technology. I am a life-long learner and have pursued additional training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness, Polyvagal Therapy, Triple P Positive Parenting, Mindful Self-Compassion, Internal Family Systems Therapy, and Family Constellations. I have also completed intensive training to provide Clinical Supervision and Consultation for qualifying and currently practicing therapists.
My favourite quote is by Mr. Rogers: “Anything that is human is mentionable. Anything that is mentionable becomes more manageable.” My goal is to create a supportive space where you feel completely safe to talk openly about absolutely anything. There is something magical that happens when we shine a light on the difficult parts of our experience and feel safe to explore them with someone who genuinely supports us; they lose the shame that grows in the shadows, and we feel more empowered as we figure out ways to overcome the challenges they may have presented previously. We begin to understand ourselves better, we find ways to treat ourselves with kindness, and we feel stronger, more empowered, and more resilient to manage life’s stressors more effectively.
Personally, I’ve been on an open-hearted journey over the past several years, and it led me to blow up my life in a couple of areas that weren’t working very well for me. After eighteen years in a career as a college professor that I loved but left me feeling more and more drained, my heart ached for opportunities where I could thrive, and my soul longed for something more. I know what it means to stare into the void of emotional overwhelm and exhaustion with anxious whispers saying, “There’s got to be more to life than this!” It hasn’t been an easy journey by any means; in fact it’s often been down-right agonizing, physically painful and terrifying at times. But here I am, listening to the guidance of my heart and feeling amazing doing what I love, offering support to others to find ways to rediscover balance, vitality, purpose, passion, and joy in their lives. Over the past two decades, I’ve helped thousands of clients and college students make life changes and find their passion and genuine happiness again. I know what a struggle it can be, because I’ve been through the darkness myself and found my way back to the light.
